FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the US Coast Guard Auxiliary mission?

The overarching mission of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is to contribute to the safety and security of our citizens, ports, waterways and coastal regions.

We will balance our missions of Recreational Boating Safety and Coast Guard Support with Maritime Homeland Security and other challenges that emerge as a result of our growing understanding of changes required in the post-9/11 era.

How will I know when the next boating class is scheduled?

Watch for announcement of our classes in the Hawaii Tribune newspaper.

Also, check back to this web site. It will be listed in the calendar.

Will I be able to be be on an actual boat during the class?

The class will not take place on a boat but at the Coast Guard Building at the Hilo Port.  IF you are interested in more advanced Seamanship training, and learning these skill on a boat, it is available to members in the Auxiliary.

How can I become a member of the Auxiliary?

To start with, take a boating class.  All members are required to take a  Boating Class.  Perspective members must be willing to get  a security  clearance, that includes filling out forms and getting fingerprinted.  Anyone over 18 may join the Auxiliary.
